Many people avoid entering contests for fear of not winning. Bury that attitude for several reasons: 1)You learn to write on deadline. 2)You learn to follow instructions. 3)It can motivate you to write every day. 4)It can motivate you to submit a story to an editor. 5)You have a chance to win. Enter my contest. The rules are simple: 1)Sign up to receive my blog in your email. 2)Write a dynamic comment about the post in the least number of words. The first post to qualify in the contest will appear Aug. 28 in my “Women and Adversity” blog. Bestselling historical romance writer Katharine Ashe answered questions about overcoming obstacles as a writer and offered to send a signed copy of “I Married the Duke” to the lucky winner. This is an opportunity for writers to accept the challenge themselves and pen a meaningful few words. The contest closes at midnight Sept. 3, and I hope to post the winner’s name and entry Sept. 11. Good luck. Jo Ann Mathews

I published three ebooks in 2020: Women and Adversity, Honoring 23 Black Women; Women and Adversity, Recognizing 23 Notable Mothers; and Women and Adversity, Saluting 23 Faithful Suffragists to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. These books are meant to be study guides for all students from grade school through college to help in choosing topics for assignments and to learn more about these noteworthy women.
