Contests fascinate writers because they want to know where they fit among their peers. I have judged contests in the past and did it again this year. I like judging because:

  • I see how other writers incorporate in their books their wide knowledge on diverse topics, e.g., poets and their styles, Greek and Roman mythology, history from B.C. to the present.
  • I understand how important it is to follow the rules of the contest.
  • I learn where the weaknesses are in my books and how to strengthen them.

“How to Make the First Cut in a Writing Contest” by Sara Backer offers six tips at

“Contest Tip Sheet” offers tips from judges at http://www.writers-editors.com/Writers/Contests/Contest_Tip_Sheet/contest_tip_sheet.htm

As a judge myself, I recommend entrants read these tips. You may very well end up in the winning column.

I published three ebooks in 2020: Women and Adversity, Honoring 23 Black Women; Women and Adversity, Recognizing 23 Notable Mothers; and Women and Adversity, Saluting 23 Faithful Suffragists to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. These books are meant to be study guides for all students from grade school through college to help in choosing topics for assignments and to learn more about these noteworthy women. Go to amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com and goodreads.com to learn more.
