Find Your Writing Niche: Fear of Writing

Leaning Tower of Pisa

Leaning Tower of Pisa

Dictionary.com defines fear as “a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc., whether the threat is real or imagined.”

Many writers have the fear, the “distressing emotion,” of rejection, and this fear prevents them from writing and submitting that wonderful story that is roiling around in their heads.

I say WRITE IT!

I have carved out a career writing feature stories for newspapers and magazines, and I love what I do. I have half a dozen stories I’m going to propose to editors by the end of the month. Some of them will be rejected and others will be a go-ahead. Despite the “nos,” I will continue to suggest ideas to editors.

The one area of my career that has received the most rejections is fiction. I have received encouraging notes but not acceptances for my fiction. I continue to submit because I believe in the stories. I read articles about how to write “good” stories, and I work to improve my style and skills. I won’t give up because I know I will be successful.

That’s the attitude that fledgling writers must take. Even though the publishing industry has changed since the Internet has entered our lives, writers are still needed.

If you want to be a writer and get published, go for it. Fulfill your dream and write those wonderful stories you have inside of you.

I published three ebooks in 2020: Women and Adversity, Honoring 23 Black Women; Women and Adversity, Recognizing 23 Notable Mothers; and Women and Adversity, Saluting 23 Faithful Suffragists to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. These books are meant to be study guides for all students from grade school through college to help in choosing topics for assignments and to learn more about these noteworthy women.
