10 Influential Women Who Overcame Adversity

Biographies tend to be inspirational, and when I came across this Web site:

http://degreed.com/blog/top-10-influential-women-overcame-adversity, I knew I wanted to read more about all these role models.

We expect these women to be listed:

  • Eleanor Roosevelt
  • Madame Curie
  • Malala Yousafzai, the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize winner at 17 years old.

I’m not surprised that these two are listed:

  • Oprah Winfrey
  • J.K. Rowling

Surprising choices:

  • Lucille Ball
  • Marilyn Monroe
  • Charlize Theron

Two who are on the list because they wanted male-dominated jobs and were rejected:

  • Hillary Rodham Clinton
  • Sandra Day O’Connor

These women represent a wide range of careers, social classes and backgrounds. Of course, many more names could be on the list, but this one proves that despite the hardships and disappointments we experience, we can overcome them and make remarkable contributions in our lifetime.

I published three ebooks in 2020: Women and Adversity, Honoring 23 Black Women; Women and Adversity, Recognizing 23 Notable Mothers; and Women and Adversity, Saluting 23 Faithful Suffragists to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. These books are meant to be study guides for all students from grade school through college to help in choosing topics for assignments and to learn more about these noteworthy women.
