Women and Adversity: African Women and Watoto

Women in American cannot envision the atrocities that millions of women around the world experience. I attended a song fest-fundraiser for Watoto recently. This Uganda-based Christian organization, with offices around the world, not only cares for and educates orphans, but it also has a program named Living Hope. This program assists vulnerable women who were abandoned or widowed, are HIV-positive, those returning from abduction by the rebel Army and teenage mothers.

It helps women restore their dignity by feeding, clothing and sheltering them. It educates them so are literate and teaches them life skills and trains them to develop their talents. The women learn business skills such as:

  • Choosing a business
  • Finding a location for the business
  • Bookkeeping
  • Financial management
  • Customer service

They learn to develop their talents through:

  • Making jewelry
  • Sewing
  • Tailoring
  • Animal husbandry
  • Horticulture
  • Bee Keeping
  • Cooking
  • Baking

I published three ebooks in 2020: Women and Adversity, Honoring 23 Black Women; Women and Adversity, Recognizing 23 Notable Mothers; and Women and Adversity, Saluting 23 Faithful Suffragists to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. These books are meant to be study guides for all students from grade school through college to help in choosing topics for assignments and to learn more about these noteworthy women. Go to amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com and goodreads.com to learn more.
