WOMEN AND ADVERSITY:
MARÍA CORINA MACHADO PARISCA
VENEZUELAN POLITICAL ACTIVIST
AWARDED NOBEL PEACE PRIZE 2025
María Corina Machado Parisca has demonstrated the determination, tenacity and perseverance to make democracy Venezuela’s form of government. She began protesting against Hugo Chávez’s government in 2004 and co-founded Sumate, a voter rights organization that promoted a referendum to recall Chávez. She organized protests in 2014 after Nicolás Maduro became president upon the death of Chávez.
She was elected to the Venezuelan National Assembly in 2010 and served until 2014 when the ruling regime led by Nicolás Maduro removed her because she appeared at the Organization of American States and spoke at the invitation of Panama about the conflicts in Venezuela. The Venezuela regime said she violated the Venezuelan constitution and was banned from holding public office in Venezuela for 15 years.
Because of her fight for democracy in Venezuela as the opposition, she was awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize. For the past year she has been in hiding because her life is threatened.
