Women and Adversity

Jess Thomas in One Plus One:

A Novel

by Jojo Moyes

Jess Thomas in Jojo Moyes’ recent novel, One Plus One, is a perfect example of a woman who has obstacles in her path.

Her husband decided to leave for a while to determine his life’s path, and Jess is left with two children to raise. She works two jobs, has the children’s interests her Number One priority and goes to extreme lengths to help them succeed. Ed Nicholls enters the picture and provides the support Jess needs and fosters the needs of the children.

The superb characterization of Jess, Ed, Tanzie and Nicky prompts the reader to want to be immersed in this story. The conflicts, the twists and turns in the plot and the ultimate conclusion leave the reader on edge but satisfied. A must read, especially for those who can’t envision solutions to their problems.
