Women and Adversity: Jo Ann Mathews

Author, Blogger

My first ebook, Women and Adversity, Honoring 23 Black Women, is available on several platforms thanks to Bent Elbow Press. The book is based on this blog I’ve written since 2014. I chose to focus on the theme of February, Black History Month, and gather the blogs I’ve posted of Black women. I added a few more and stopped at 23 because time was running out, and I wanted it online before February passed.

The descriptions of each of these women are not meant to be biographical sketches. They are profiles with the merest highlights of their lives. The women range from historical figures, such as Harriet Tubman and Rosa Parks, to living examples of courage like Myrlie Evers-Williams and Mae Jemison, and modern-day women aiming to reach their goals, Shea-Ra Nichi, Tanarsha Hunter and Tondalao Hall.

My purpose with my blog and with this book is to motivate women of all ages from preteens to seniors to be inspired by these courageous women. The ones who have passed faced tremendous challenges and worked to overcome them. The ones still living, including those in the senior citizen category, continue to face challenges and will be remembered for fighting to achieve success.

It’s a huge endeavor to get a book published, especially when it’s self-published. No editor, agent or publisher provides editorial changes or suggestions. Editing services come at a price, so compassionate friends and relatives accept the invitation to read and offer possible changes. They catch the obvious misspellings and omissions, but it’s on the self-published author to eliminate all errors and kinks and give the final okay for publication. I hope I have achieved that goal. I plan to write at least three more ebooks based on monthly themes.

Women and Adversity, Honoring 23 Black Women costs $2.99. Here are the links to the various platforms:

I published three ebooks in 2020: Women and Adversity, Honoring 23 Black Women; Women and Adversity, Recognizing 23 Notable Mothers; and Women and Adversity, Saluting 23 Faithful Suffragists to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. These books are meant to be study guides for all students from grade school through college to help in choosing topics for assignments and to learn more about these noteworthy women.
